About Us

Our team is dedicated, caring and reliable. Our shareholders and board of directors are at the forefront of the aged care sector in New Zealand.

The Alpine Retirement Group Board has high level financial expertise to safeguard the funds and resources of the village, as well as the resident’s interests, and has over 20 years’ experience in aged care. 

We have been highly involved in setting education and care standards for aged care facilities – right across the country.

Experienced Shareholders and Directors

The board of directors and major shareholders are:

John Ryder M.Com (Hons), CA; CMA (Chairman). 
John is a chartered accountant and was joint founder and joint Managing Director of listed company Ryman Healthcare (for 18 years). He was a national executive member of the NZ Aged Care Association, and the NZ Retirement Villages Association, and was the 3rd person to be elected to the Australasian Housing Hall of Fame, for... “his outstanding contribution to the development of the Seniors Housing Industry in New Zealand.” John has recently written an investment book:Global Investing – A Guide for New Zealanders. He is chairman of Nelson based company, New Zealand King Salmon.

Simon O’Dowd (Managing Director).
Simon has been the National President of the NZ Aged Care Association for 20 years – which has as members around 80% of the employers in the overall NZ aged care sector. Simon is also on the board of the Retirement Villages Association. He has been actively involved in representing the sector on most of the major government and industry study groups and has owned and managed care facilities for over 20 years.

Jeremy O’Dowd (Director).
Jeremy has worked in the aged care industry for 23 years, and has a leading role in the Alpine View day to day operations. He is the director in charge of sales and marketing and takes a keen interest in the aesthetic and architectural characteristics of the village.

Wendy Fleming RGON (Director).
Wendy was Vice Chairperson of Alzheimer’s Disease International (the international federation for over 80 Alzheimers associations around the world) for 6 years and was then elected an Honorary Vice President for life. Wendy is also a life member (and previous Chairperson) of Alzheimers New Zealand, the current Chairperson of Alzheimers New Zealand Charitable Trust, Patron of Dementia Canterbury, advisory board member of the Centre of Brain Research and a member of the Governance Board of Brain Research New Zealand (CoRE). She is a registered nurse.

Simon Plowman B.Com Econ (Director).
Simon has spent 10 years working with private companies as an investment director with Direct Capital, New Zealand’s leading private equity firm and now operates his own investment company. He has been a director of numerous private companies, in a wide range of industries, and is well known for his analytical and economic expertise. The Plowman family were previous owners of New Zealand Towel Supply and are substantial investors and philanthropists.

Graeme Dodd MBA Dist. (CEO / Director).
Prior to joining the Alpine Group, Graeme was New Zealand Managing Director of Triton Hearing Limited. Graeme grew Triton from just 2 audiology clinics to over 50 locations (from Keri Keri to Gore), securing around 25% of the national audiology market. Graeme has also been involved in the education industry and in healthcare staff recruitment and is highly experienced in controlling multi-site operations. He has an excellent command of marketing and financial systems and (via Triton) has successfully led a nationwide team serving the same customers that the Alpine Group caters for.     
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Kerry Mason FNZIA (Director).
Kerry is a registered architect and a fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Architects. He was a founding partner of Christchurch architectural firm +MAP and was previously Managing Director of leading architectural firm Warren and Mahoney (1989 to 2001). He has won a wide range of awards for residential, resort and commercial buildings and is highly respected for his design skills. Alpine’s modus operandi is to provide residents with individuality and flare in their houses, apartments and care facilities and Kerry’s appointment to the Board signifies the importance the company places on innovative design.

Other Staff

Jo Young RN: PGD Nursing Practice and Assessment (Nurse Manager)
Jo Young is Alpine View’s Nurse Manager. Jo is an experienced Registered Nurse with 30 years of clinical, operational and strategic experience in the NHS and 5 years in New Zealand; including Clinical Nurse Manager roles in aged care hospital facilities.

Standards of Care and Aged Care Education 

John Ryder, Simon O’Dowd and Wendy Fleming (all directors of Alpine View) founded Health Ed Trust NZ (Inc.) in 1997, which is a charitable education trust operating on behalf of the aged care sector. The trust has been the dominant private training establishment for aged care in New Zealand for nearly 20 years, used by around 60% of the industry (about 500 facilities nationwide) and there have been over 25,000 student graduates to its NZQA approved care courses (the trust merged with the industry training organisation, Careerforce, in 2016).
